Monday in Toronto: event on innovation and the music industry

Just came across this for those in or near Toronto. The CEO of New York music start-up Indaba will be here at MaRS on Monday for a lecture on new business models for music and media in the era of file sharing:

  • Learn how collaborative technologies are rapidly changing how companies, brands and individuals interact with one and other and the content that can come out of direct relationships.
  • Recognize emerging business models for both professional and amateur artists as well as corporate and social enterprises that can be applied to other industries.
  • Be exposed to how an early-adopting brand has successfully incorporated social media across its activities.

    Just a quick thought on this interesting talk. Not only did he rehash the viral marketing campaign that took indaba from relatively unknown to featured on the Colbert Report, but it was really cool to hear, first hand, about how money can been derived from music related services in the contemporary and dynamic marketplace. If I remember correctly, we were told that Indaba generates revenue from three streams; selling services to the musicians affiliated with the site, by connecting groups like advertisers and ‘major’ musicians like Mariah to the community of professional musicians and also by selling trend data to people and firms who want to know about tastes and shifts related to music and cultural scenes. I think this is a great example of a new, sustainable and potentially very lucrative business model within the music industry that will become more popular overtime, precisely because it is based on providing music related products and services rather than simply selling recorded music.
